Mile End Hospital in London, forms part of Barts Health NHS Trust, the largest NHS Trust in the UK serving a population of 2.5 million in East London and beyond. The Trust’s hospitals are committed to reducing their environmental impact through investment in infrastructure, improved biodiversity, integrated behavioural change, active travel and adaptation planning, delivered through strategic partnerships. Within its communities, the Trust commits to tackling four core impact areas: reducing fuel poverty, improving air quality, sustainable growing, together with food and nutrition education.

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainability, Mile End Hospital has become the first hospital in the UK to use Cheetah™ technology to make energy efficient savings.

Completely unique to the hospital marketplace, Cheetah™ is now installed in the main kitchen at the hospital, which is used to cook food for 13,783 staff, together with events throughout the year. The ventilation system from their main kitchen previously consumed a constant 40 kW, 24 hours per day and exhausted over 2m³/sec of conditioned air continuously into the atmosphere. The air conditioning system in the main kitchen incorporates a 4.0kW supply fan.

Cheetah™ will save Mile End 49,794kWh and 13.3 tonnes of CO₂ a year, achieving a payback of just 1.95 years and projected annual financial saving of several thousand pounds.

Steve Royce, Head of Estates at Mile End Hospital had this to say about Cheetah™, “We have been delighted by how simple the system is and how much energy we have been able to save. While the majority of our catering is outsourced we still have a main kitchen which is heavily in use, and with energy saving such an important consideration for the NHS we are thrilled with the results achieved. We will now be looking to see if the technology can be employed elsewhere in the hospital.”

Mile End Hospital were so delighted with the saving that they are now working closely with Barts Health NHS Trust to progress rolling the system out to the other hospitals in the group.
